Vango Icarus 400 Tent

The Vango Icarus 400 Tent has been radically altered for the 2012 season. The Vango Icarus 400 will now feature increased head height (now 180cm), larger windows and adjustable low level ventilation. The Vango Icarus range has built its popularity on the back of its fantastically simple 'as-one' easy to pitch system and the simple 3-pole 'no hassle' construction makes it the most ideal of weekend tents.

The Vango Icarus 400 features a 4-berth breathable inner tent (with removable divider), a generous (200x260cm) living area, a fully sewn-in groundsheet plus 'U' shaped front door with step-in sill. Other features of the Vango Icarus 400 tent include a Protex 3000 embossed polyester flysheet with 3000mm hydrostatic head waterproof protection, venting panels for AirZone air circulation, Powerflex fibreglass poles, TBS tension band system for extra strengthening in adverse weather, 10,000mm HH polyethylene groundsheet, 'D' shaped side door with mesh double door and step-in sill, 'U' shaped front door with mesh double door and step-in sill, heavy duty continuous poles sleeves, storm skirts, pelmet with storage pockets, cable entry point, cable retainers, front door mesh vent, reflective webbing, 'Crystal Clear' windows (with internal covers), handled carry bag, repair kit, orange guylines with retainers included. 10 minutes pitch time. Flame retardant throughout. Wind and rain tested.

  • Lovely Tent - Bag way too small! 6th September 2012 45 I'm definitely a comfort driven camper, and would use this tent for 1-2 people for a week's comfortable camping. While there's plenty of room inside this tent for two people and a week's worth of camping gear it is also a very small tent given that you can stand inside it, and sleep four people in it if necessary. Compared to my friend's family sized 5-6 person tents this looks compact and neat, and doesn't tower over me so is easy to erect. The square corners are great for storing food & gear, mean you don't have to worry about the sleeping compartment narrowing towards the end of the tent, and make it very easy to lay out correctly when you are pegging out. I bought this with the footprint groundsheet (something I would definitely recommend as it means you don't have to go home with a muddy bottom to your bathtub tent!) which mean it's easy to place corretly and peg out square. I found this tent very easy to erect by myself, BUT it took me at least 40mins peg everything out correctly, and although I could probably get the fly up and waterproof in 10mins (as stated) there would still be plenty of pegging out to finish! There are plenty of pockets inside the tent, decent air vents, a cable entry point and velcro ties to run a cable to the apex of the tent (presumably for a light), and velcro ties for all of the guy ropes. Please note, there are not two seperate sleeping compartments, there is one large compartment, and an extra piece of material with hook & loop fastenings at four corners to section the room into two if you wish. There are two doors to the one compartment, so each side has it's own door. It is also worth noting that the photograph being used to illustrate the Icarus 400 is not actually the 400, but is the 500. The Icarus 400 doesn't have pockets running down the centre of the inner tent door, instead there are two small pockets either side of the bedroom doors on the outer fly sheet. The inner tent is attached to the outer using plastic G clamps that are impossible to open when you are trying to take the tent down (and pretty hard to clip in the first place). Before I go camping again I am going to have to cut off the G flap to turn them into C hooks. It's been said before, but it's worth saying again, the bag for this tent is too small ... it was actually very hard to get my factory packed tent out of the bag without breaking the zipper as it was so tightly packed inside when I recieved it. Even after just unrolling it to check that everything was there it was impossible to get the outer and inner back into the same bag, so I had to split my tent into two bags. I've still not managed to get my outer back into the original bag after my camping trip so I may have to buy an even larger bag. Vango should have supplied a significantly larger bag with this tent. I love this tent ... it's perfect for just me for a comfortable trip, and great when I have company. Hopefully Vango will take the hint and make the bag considerably larger for next season's tent, but otherwise this is a fabulous tent!

  • Withstood a wet bank holiday 6th September 2012 45 Took it on the back of the Harley for a weekend in Cornwall but it was Bank holiday so that means wet. Easy to put up with two despite the strong wind. Plenty of room to spread out and plenty of light from the windows. Everything inside stayed dry. The only downside is it is a bit on the heavy side for biking but manageable. [...]

  • Vango Icarus 400 - Simply the Best! 9th August 2012 55 We took this tent to the IOW festival for its first outing and it was amazing. I've had Vango tents before and they have always been great. However, given the wind and rain that was thrown at this tent, it surprised even me and I had high expectations already! The new tension band system meant that the tent more than held its own in 40-50mph gusts, and it rained torrentially for 5-6hrs and we didn't see a drop inside. The living area is very spacious and the venting works well in the morning when you wake up with "tent mouth". I would recommend this tent only to my best friends, its that good! Thanks Stan!

  • Weekend getaways.... 21st June 2012 55 I bought this tent so that I could get away on my own as well as with my 2 children...found it easy to pitch by myself, even first go was just over half an hour...spacious and plenty of head height. Can't wait for more getaways!

  • Save a bag from your old tent! 24th May 2012 45 Heavier than I expected: probably because the poles are much sturdier than in similar tents. Luckily I had a spare bag from an old tent - there is no way you'll get it all back in the bag it comes in. Half an hour for erection is more likely than the advertised 10 mins. But I'm going to like it!
